As part of our series about “authors who are making an important social impact,” we had the pleasure of interviewing Lorraine Devon Wilke.

Can you describe how you aim to make a significant social impact with your books?

‘A poem cannot stop a bullet. A novel can’t defuse a bomb. But we are not helpless. We can sing the truth and name the liars.’ This quote by Salman Rushdie is my mandate, my motto.

“It’s true that to make ‘significant social impact,’ one has to have a huge canvas, a wide audience; far-reaching influence. Independent artists such as me tend to play to smaller circles, but still, impact can be had, sometimes more than we know and with whatever size audience we can reach.

“As a novelist, essayist, and songwriter, I approach my themes and subject matter with an eye toward exploring meaningful ideas, making a point; touching a nerve, asserting a belief, or provoking a thought. Even with fiction or song lyrics, you can entertain and intrigue, make someone smile or get up and dance, but still … they can be moved. My creative impulse is always to dig a little deeper into human stories and emotions; the issues, events, and relationships that impact their choices, the twists and turns of their journeys, to hopefully inspire something in the person listening or reading. A producer once told me my song lyrics were ‘like little movies,’ and I appreciated the perspective! As for my books …”

Moderated by former journalist and current SJVW CEO, Lois Henry, Bakersfield’s Beth Brookhart, and Lorraine Devon Wilke discussed their individual journeys to publishing, the pitfalls and challenges of being an older author in a youth-oriented industry, and how they’re moving forward in both the art and commerce of writing. With an engaged and enthusiastic audience, they shared about both their books, as well as what’s up ahead. And there were cookies!

Were you there at THE BOOK JEWEL, July 26, 2025?

“Was an all-out love fest Saturday night at The Book Jewel, which has to be one of the most accommodating, inventive, FABULOUS indie book stores in existence. That takes some seriously clever thinking—and a willingness to move all the book shelves out of the way to create a performance space. AMAZING!”

~ Brett Callwood, The Music Connection

EXCERPT: “Wilke’s prose is chatty and fluid, pulling the reader along with Libby and Bridget as they dip their toes back into the waters of art and romance. Though the two leads are in different places in life, they both feel too old to be where they are, which adds a compelling twist to the mother-daughter dynamic…The music industry material and Los Angeles setting add fun color, but readers will most appreciate the attention Wilke pays to her characters’ inner lives. A finely crafted novel about sidelined dreams and second chances. OUR VERDICT: GET IT!” ~ Kirkus Reviews

Chick Singer by Lorraine Devon Wilke is a heartfelt, emotionally nuanced novel about music, motherhood, and the complicated legacy of dreams deferred. Libby Conlin once chased rock-and-roll stardom in the 1980s but now lives a quieter life. That is until her recently divorced daughter, Bridget, returns home, reigniting old tensions. When Bridget uploads Libby’s long-forgotten demo tracks to the internet, Libby’s music and the secrets it conceals go viral, catapulting her back into the spotlight. As past and present collide, Libby must confront unresolved heartbreaks and family dynamics while navigating a second chance at creative and personal fulfillment. Set to a soundtrack of hard-earned wisdom and emotional honesty, Chick Singer is a soul-stirring tale about finding your voice at any age.

Author Lorraine Devon Wilke’s novel comes from the heart in a deeply moving examination of art, aging, and the unbreakable bond between mothers and daughters. There’s emotional weight even from the opening of this deep read. Libby and Bridget are infused with brilliant dialogue exchanges that convey hidden tensions and a lot between the lines for raw, real, and undeniably relatable characters that leap off the pages. Libby’s dilemmas are also presented with precise narrative control that lets readers into her head when it matters most, describing her personal turmoil in relatable ways that readers from all walks of life can understand. The prose is far from simplistic in its descriptions of reactions to the resurgence of the past, as Wilke writes with lyrical grace and unflinching authenticity to bring these difficult feelings out. Overall, Chick Singer is a vibrant read that I would certainly recommend, and a celebration of second chances that will uplift and inspire. ~ K.C. Finn, Readers’ Favorite, 5 Stars

Halfway through reading Chick Singer I stopped to check Spotify and add Lorraine Devon Wilke to my Following list so that I could listen to her songs while I read (the perfect accompaniment!), and that was the only time I put the book down from beginning to end.

At the heart of Chick Singer – more so even than the music that suffuses it – is the main character Libby’s personal journey to reconnect with her daughter and her own past, and through doing so attempt to change her current trajectory into the future.

The story feels deeply personal and intimate, as Libby lets us in to her feelings about her empty nest and adult children, the prospect of dating after divorce, her long-time friendships, lost dreams and lifelong regrets with a raw honesty that totally resonated in my middle-ageish heart. And it wasn’t just Libby, all of the character felt believable, familiar even. I felt like I knew and empathised with them all (even those I didn’t necessarily agree with).

Wilke’s writing flows beautifully and totally immersed me in Libby’s secrets and struggles, along with those of her prickly daughter Bridget, and I left the story feeling thoughtful, slightly sad at the unescapable passing of time and opportunities, and hopeful that second chances and fresh starts can still be in the future at any age.

I enjoyed both of this author’s books that I have read previously – she has a knack for writing believable and readable mid-life struggles – but this one I loved. If you love stories about music, about family, about secrets and second chances, and about following your dreams and creating your own future, then this is the book for you too. ~ Steph Warren, BOOKSHINE BLOG

The Three Tomatoes/”LA Life” — Spring Reading Guide:

I don’t usually read during the day (I tend to fall asleep,) but wow, oh wow, I read Chick Singer, written by Lorraine Devon Wilke, in just two sittings. And I stayed wide awake. Chick Singer is a gem of a novel that is captivating, heartfelt with rich elegant storytelling that flows beautifully while the clearly defined characters are deeply relatable with a powerful message.

A former ‘80s rock singer, Libby Conlin, is forced to excavate her mysterious past when her boomeranging adult daughter secretly — and successfully — posts her old music online. Libby’s glamorous 80’s stardom and her mysterious past—and all its dark secrets—comes roaring into the present. Chick Singer explores a complex mother/daughter relationship against the backdrop of music, dreams, and love—and the art of redefining all three.

Lorraine draws readers into a world where complex women’s journeys—both personal and professional—unfold with nuance, wit, and emotional depth. One of the most compelling aspects of Chick Singer is its story’s evolution and the character’s self-acceptance and personal growth. It’s a story about finding a home within oneself, embracing one’s identity, and recognizing one’s worth. Hey, there’s even romance that is woven in seamlessly. Brava! You will love this new novel from Lorraine Devon Wilke, Tomatoes! GET THE BOOK! ~Debbie Zipp, “LA Life” Editor

The latest review for THE ALCHEMY OF NOISE  from national digital lifestyle guide, The Three Tomatoes:

The Alchemy of Noise by Lorraine Devon Wilke is a poignant and significant literary work with a level of artistry that is hard to achieve even by the best novelists. Lorraine’s colorful and multi-layered articulation of the many facets and nuances of her dynamic and lovely characters, Chris and Sidonie, is perfection. Her intimate and deft portrayal of Chris and Sidonie’s journey together and the deep love between and around them, as well as the devastating challenges and negative outside influences they experience as a couple was compelling and kept me thoroughly engaged.

You’ll love these people, and you will root for them as they experience the roller coaster ride of their relationship in the modern and, often times, cruel world in which they live. Chris’s life experience as a Black man before and during his relationship with Sidonie, and the life experience of Sidonie as a white woman before and during her relationship with Chris, was stunning, illuminating, and devastating but never without hope and humor.

The incredible love story, rich characters and the important issues of today presented in this beautifully written novel reminded me what a highly skilled, sensitive and intuitive writer can achieve. Not only did “The Alchemy of Noise” entertain and excite me, it also enlightened and changed me… for the better. And that’s a big “Wow” in my humble opinion. You should do yourself a big favor and read it ASAP.

AUTHORITY MAGAZINE:

Lorraine was invited by Authority Magazine to share her thoughts on the topic of “second chapters,” and never one to dismiss an opportunity to discuss hard-won insights or useful experiences—and the value of both— she accepted. It’s a comprehensive and thought-provoking discussion; following the excerpt here is a link to the full piece on Authority Magazine.

In this series called “Second Chapters; How I Reinvented Myself In The Second Chapter Of My Life “ we are interviewing successful people who reinvented themselves in a second chapter in life, to share their story and help empower others.

As a part of this interview series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lorraine Devon Wilke.

An accomplished artist in a wide range of creative mediums, Lorraine started her career as an actress and rock & roll singer/songwriter, finding success in both arenas well into the 2000s. While she continues to perform whenever opportunities present themselves, she’s designed a second chapter built around photography and writing. Currently, she has three award-winning novels in the marketplace, hundreds of essays and articles in media, literary journals, and books, and has recently signed on as the in-house “LA Life” photographer for the national digital lifestyle magazine, The Three Tomatoes.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Before we start, our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you tell us a bit about your childhood backstory?

I’m originally from the Midwest; born in Chicago, grew up in small towns in northern Illinois; third oldest of eleven kids in a family that required we learn responsibility, engaged in great dollops of fun, and held creativity in high regard. Both my parents grew up in the city, which nurtured their love of music, art, theater, and books, and they were committed to raising kids with an appreciation for the same. Music was everywhere, we read voraciously (even spent a decade or so without TV), put on basement shows and backyard carnivals, and, given our embrace of all things artistic, each of us emerged from our childhoods with creative proclivities of one kind or another. I majored in theater at the University of Illinois, then hit the road with a rock & roll band, ultimately landing in Los Angeles where I happily remain.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

It’s a very simple one: “Express yourself.” When I was a kid, there was an R&B song with that title written and sung by Charles Wright, and I felt like that lyric was my mantra. I was never someone who could sit quietly and keep my thoughts internalized — in fact, I can picture anyone who knows me laughing out loud at that notion! I was a person who was driven to express myself, in myriad ways, but mostly through singing, acting; comedy, even early writing efforts. But singing was my greatest Muse, and still, to this day, one of my very favorite ways to “express myself.”

PRAISE FOR THE ALCHEMY OF NOISE:

FOREWORD REVIEWS:

“Part awakening, part trial by fire, The Alchemy of Noise is a timely social novel that unfolds with tenderness and cruelty. A story on fresh beginnings marred by police brutality, The Alchemy of Noise tests the limits of love. Lorraine Devon Wilke’s sharp interracial romance strikes at the heart of contemporary race issues with thoughtful, vulnerable characters who excavate their own beliefs to reaffirm what’s worth fighting for… Between its heartfelt message for allies and its cautious navigation of what it’s like to be made a target, a profound optimism emerges. Love can’t solve everything for Sidonie and Chris, but it continually encircles them.”

WORKING MOTHER MAGAZINE:

10 of the Most Anticipated Books to Make Time for in 2019:

“An impactful story about race, equality and love, The Alchemy of Noise has quickly become a highly-buzzed-about read in the vast community of female writers.”

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY:

“Wilke’s rewarding novel (after Hysterical Love) follows the relationship between a black sound engineer and the white manager of the club where he works. … When Chris is arrested for criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, and brutally beaten by police, Sidonie supports him as he decides whether to go to trial or take a plea deal. But the possibility that he may be implicated in another, more serious crime causes a fracture in their relationship that may be irreparable. Wilke’s story will satisfy readers with its emotional depth and strong characters, making for a memorable novel.”

KIRKUS REVIEWS:

“Wilke’s prose is cautious and empathetic, probing at the edges of politeness, taboo, and uncomfortable truth …the directness and openness with which the author explores the topic, as well as its continuing relevance, make this a novel that will still read as daring to many.”

READERS’ FAVORITE REVIEWS:

5-Stars: The writing is emotive and highly descriptive, painting snippets of life for Chris as he struggles with the everyday racism and assumptions put upon young black men all across America, and Sidonie’s struggle to connect and understand is intelligently handled. Neither of them is perfect, but together they find something special of their own. Wilke’s superb pacing and frank dialogue guide us through every harrowing moment as they fight hard to protect it. The Alchemy of Noise is a highly entertaining and engaging piece of drama which shines a light on pivotal issues of today.”

BRIT + CO:

12 Can’t-Miss Books by Women to Read This Year:

“In this devastating and touching new novel from Lorraine Devon Wilke, two unlikely lovers find themselves in the middle of a corrupt investigation that will change their lives forever. Chris is a black sound engineer and when his path crosses with Sidonie, a white and successful venue manager, the two quickly fall into a whirlwind love affair. But everything suddenly changes when Chris is arrested and charged with horrific crimes that will show the young couple just how wicked the world can be.”

RICK KOGAN:

Chicago Tribune & After Hours w/Rick Kogan, WGN Radio 720:

“A fascinating book, really, really quite something… a real Chicago novel. I do find something quite courageous about this book. It’s not only terribly provocative and moves like a freight train, but it’s a very, very, very ambitious book.”

BOOKAPOTAMUS:

“This book. Stop what you are doing. And read this book. It’s heartbreaking, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s daring in the most important way… This book haunts me – but it’s a good thing. I cannot stop thinking about it. I feel as if Sidonie and Chris are real people, and in a way, they are – as the gut-wrenching brutality, tension, and racism is entirely plausible in this day and age… I loved every minute of this story.”

GEORGIA ROSE BOOKS:

“The exploration of all the relationships in this novel is excellent. The characters rich and rounded, the way they react and interact absorbing. It is very well written. It’s intelligent, educational and eye-opening, though still easy to read, the prose flowing and drawing you in. The Alchemy of Noise is an excellent novel I thoroughly enjoyed and don’t hesitate for a moment to recommend.”

BARB TAUB | WRITING & COFFEE Book Blog UK:

“The writing of The Alchemy of Noise is hauntingly beautiful, shocking, and compelling. I feel like I know so many of the characters, that they are the family and friends and fellow students I knew in Chicago. And yet I don’t know them at all, can’t believe they would react as the characters did here. But, as Sidonie points out, I’ve read the papers, listened to the news, heard the casually racist and discriminatory remarks. And even with a love as big as Chris and Sidonie’s, I don’t know how you get past that. Maybe reading this stunningly well written book is a good way to start.”

BOOKED UP GIRL BLOG:

“I absolutely loved this book, and found myself engrossed in their story and journey. I felt a somewhat deep connection with Sid and Chris’ characters. The story is just heart wrenching – I really couldn’t put the book down, and it will stay haunting me for a long time to come. If you haven’t yet read this – it must be next on your TBR!”

JANNI STYLES1 BOOK BLOG:

“From the challenge of loving narrow-minded relations to finding love without trust impossible, no matter your race or level of privilege, this book is rich with raw human experience. Deftly executed with grace and the author’s own keen sensibilities, the story left me wishing it would never end. It is well-paced with moments of epiphany that had me feeling I was not just a reader but part of the story. In some way, we all are. Every single one of us can take responsibility for changing history for the better, lessons of yesterday are a chance to improve, to hate less, love more and a chance to be at peace with all people.”

WORDS-A-PLENTY REVIEW:

The Alchemy of Noise was not what I expected. With each page I found myself becoming more and more intrigued. Then I had to step back for a minute and see the much larger picture she was painting with her words. Emotionally wrenching … well written and developed, Wilke has communicated the fears, doubts and being human in a world where intolerance of difference is rampant, where being humane is not extended to those who are different. This is not a light book, it is one that will stick with you for weeks if not longer. I finished this book about three weeks ago and just now sat down to write the review. Having come from a family from the deepest part of Indiana where racism runs unchecked and fueled by the past, I still feel the impact of this story.”

MORE PRAISE FOR THE ALCHEMY OF NOISE:

“This is not a run-of-the-mill love story. But Lorraine Devon Wilke is not a run-of-the-mill writer. The Alchemy of Noise, a powerful interracial romance with rich, cinematic quality, is gritty, clever and superbly crafted, sustaining a gut-wrenching level of tension until the final page.” ~ Jane Davis, author of Smash All the Windows & seven other titles; winner of Daily Mail’s First Novel Award.

“Every character was authentic. Sidonie and Chris have great depth; they’re real-life people, and I wanted them to overcome, for their love to prevail. The plot line was great as well. The microaggressions, the hidden and overt racism, the passive-aggressive low-key racism—it was all in there, all very plausible and realistic. The book is a sort of Racism 101, an eye-opener for allies.” ~ Regina McRae, BLM activist, award-winning baker/owner of NYC bakery, Grandma’s Secrets, and author of Taking the Cake, Your Ultimate Cake Guide

“Beautifully written, perfectly balanced, and evenly paced, The Alchemy of Noise, Devon Wilke’s story of love, redemption, and racial conflict in the shadow of contemporary urban America, is a tour-de-force from an author at the top of her game.” ~ Mark Barry, author of The Night Porter and Carla

“A powerful novel that wraps the love story of a mixed-race couple in a ‘ripped from the headlines’ narrative, The Alchemy of Noise is alternately touching, painful, sweet, and enraging. With its exploration of race and privilege, and stunning, unexpected plot twists, it demands your attention from beginning to end.” ~ Susie Singer Carter, award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter (My Mom & the Girl and Soul Surfer)

“Reading this combination love story and page-turning legal drama, I was particularly moved by the exploration of the psychological and emotional impacts of racism on each of the characters. The Alchemy of Noise dives into those issues in new, unexamined ways, and as a professional working in the field of PTSD and family trauma, I found that element to be a powerful and authentic driver of this very topical story.” ~ Nancy Locke Capers, writer/producer, licensed psychotherapist

“Infused with beauty, humor and pain, The Alchemy of Noise is a modern American love story that asks if love can bridge the distance between two Americas. Author Lorraine Devon Wilke writes with authenticity, insight, sensitivity. Her characters Sidonie and Chris (and the loved ones in their orbit) stayed with me like old friends whose success I am rooting for, but is in no way guaranteed in a world where skin color may be destiny.” ~ Laura Nicole Diamond, author of Shelter Us and Deliver Me

“The story of Sidonie, a white woman, and Chris, a black man, is a well-written and compelling tale of love that offers a glimpse into the unique experiences couples face in interracial relationships. When allegations of criminal activity are lodged against Chris, the two are forced into a confusing and frightening reality which shakes them to their very cores. The Alchemy of Noise is an intense emotional journey, and Wilke masterfully guides us through it with laughter, tears, and thought-provoking insight.” ~ Kimberley A. Johnson, author of Peyton’s Choice and The Virgin Diaries

The Alchemy of Noise is an honest, empathetic, and powerful look at racial tensions in modern America, explored through one interracial couple’s burgeoning relationship—and how it plays on the concerns and assumptions of their friends and families. The writing is excellent, the characters full and real and conflicted—just like life.” ~ Laurie Boris, author of The Call, a Baseball Novel and A Sudden Gust of Gravity

“Lorraine Devon Wilke’s The Alchemy of Noise includes brushstrokes of nightlife, music, the club world; true-ringing elements that too often in the lit-game are swung at and missed. Her portrait of Chicago as a representation of contemporary urban culture is so vivid it stands as a character all its own.” ~ Junior Burke, author of A Thousand Eyes and Something Gorgeous

We live in a time when history is made by Tweets, when what happens there can instantly be known here. A time when anyone with a digital device can express views, publish opinions, or comment on news within moments of it unfolding, making the (somewhat dated) concept of “information superhighway” never more accurate…or glutted.

We want to be informed, we want to keep our awareness sharp, or maybe we just want some good old chatty entertainment, but given the sheer volume of what comes at us daily, it seems truth—and its ripple effects of impact, inspiration and illumination—often gets lost in the shuffle.

Yet truth is conveyed in many more ways than just news and social media, in just non-fiction tomes and memoirs of note. In fact, some of our most poignant cultural truths have been discovered and disseminated through stories, through imagination…through fiction.
